Slow Stitching Workshop

Slow Stitching

A gentle introduction to boro: the traditional Japanese method of mending and extending the life of everyday textiles.
Traditionally the fabrics were indigo-dyed and the patched items became a wonderful mosaic of blues covered with beautiful Sashiko hand stitching. Beginning with dyed scraps of cottons Jaki will show you the simple stitch technique needed to create your own unique fabric.

Skill Level: only manual dexterity for hand sewing is needed

Requirements: All materials supplied: cotton threads, hand dyed fabrics, sewing needles.

Rug Hooking Workshop

Introduction to rug hooking

Jane will gently introduce you to rug hooking, teaching you how to make a simple but lovely decorative piece of textiles for a small hessian bag. Jane will also encourage you to look at and experiment with changing colours, which will add to your overall design.

Skill Level: Beginners, no previous experience of rug hooking required.

Requirements: All materials supplied: hand dyed wool blanket, hessian bag and hook.

Learn the addivctive craft of crocheting with a highly experienced and patient teacher. From holding the hook and yarn you will progress to master chain, slip stitch and double crochet. Your ‘goodie bag’ will include sufficient yarn to complete a retro covered coathanger complete with a crocheted flower or pom pom embellishment, your crochet hook and a comprehensive instruction booklet for you to refer back to later. Excellent instruction and a free vintage style coathanger .

Whether you have been journaling for years or are giving it a go for the first time, this workshop is for you. In this workshop you will be making your own project journal, the cover of which will be leather.
Jaki will teach you how to make “signatures” and stitch them all together using the “long stitch’ method of book binding.

Skill Level: only manual dexterity for hand sewing is needed.

Requirements: all materials supplied: paper, sewing needle, leather cover, and linen thread.

Using hand dyed strips of vintage woollen blankets, Jane will teach you how to manipulate your materials into tight rolls and using simple stitches, join together to create sculptured creations, that could also become unique jewellery accessories.

Skill Level: No previous experience required.

For those who can do double and treble crochet come and explore a variety of textural pattern stitches to make the Sundial Yarndale purse. Puffs, clusters, popcorns and spike stitches colourfully combine in a really useful size purse. Your ‘goodie bag’ will contain yarn, hook, sew in purse clasp and lining fabric plus instruction booklet with the pattern and making up instructions.

In this colourful workshop, Jaki will take you through the simple steps of stitching your design onto the front piece of your purse with tapestry wool and some of Jaki’s hand spun yarn: simple running stitch will be used to make the design. The purse will then be machine stitched together; his can be done on the any of the sewing machines provided, with guidance and help where required. Jaki will show you how to join the purse hinge and finish off. You will go away with a finished purse, into which can be put you crotchet, knitting or sewing project.

The starting point for this workshop is a simple crochet basket. Jane will then introduce you to crochet embellishments and surface decoration. There will be lots of hints and tips along the way, on how to vary the shape, colour and texture, in order to produce a versatile and practical piece of woolliness.

Skill Level: Suitable for those who can create a chain and another basic stitch e.g. double crochet.

Intarsia Design Workshop

Intarsia is worked back and forth, knitting and purling, using multi-coloured strands of yarn. Unlike Fair Isle knitting, in which small repeating patterns are created by alternating two strands of yarn in different colours across a row, intarsia knit designs are generally free-form, and each area of colour is worked from an individual ball, bobbin, or length of yarn. In this workshop Jaki will teach you: how to design an intarsia pattern; attach a new colour yarn; change strands; to knot or not to knot and then you will be equipped to go and create you own very colourful and unique patterns.

Skill Level: Knitting knowledge of casting on and off, and stocking stitch.

Requirements: all materials supplied: knitting needles, wool, pencils, graph paper.

Come and join Jane on this relaxing adventure: stitching and stuffing your very own bird. You will be guided through the construction of your bird using pre-cut pieces of hand dyed wool; blanket stitching these pieces together and then stuffing your bird to give it that all important 3D quality, Your bird will be then suspended onto a decorated hoop.
