Weave a Stash Busting Mat with Samina Begum of Juko Designs
Sunday 26th September | 10.30 – 12.00 | Workshop Theatre 1
In this workshop you will learn how to weave a table mat using the simple technique of weaving with weaving sticks. You will be provided with all equipment, instructions, yarn and taught the basic techniques of weaving with sticks. You will then be shown how to make strips of fabric using oddments of yarn to create colourful strips that are then coiled up and sewn into mats. These mats can be as small as coaster or can be grown into large rugs.
At the end of the workshop, you will have woven either a couple of coasters or a small table mat and will have learnt how to change yarns, shaping and finishing techniques and have the knowledge to create more mats using yarn from your stash. You will also be able to take away your weaving sticks and full instruction booklet.
Weaving with sticks is very addictive and therapeutic and a great way of using up your stash of yarn to make space to buy more!
Juko Designs: Samina Begum and Janet Toms trained in weaving at Huddersfield University and joined forces to form Juko Designs in 2006. Initially they concentrated on weaving their own fabrics to make a range of products, but as more and more people showed an interest in learning how to weave, they produced a range of easy-to-use weaving kits. Drawing on their background in weaving they provide comprehensive step by step photo instructions to accompany their kits allowing beginners to enjoy the creative pleasure of weaving.
Both are also skilled in putting colours and textures together and enjoy searching for more unusual yarns and trims to create a selection of colour coordinated, textured Yarn Hanks and Textile Inspiration Packs which allow crafters to easily add colour and texture to their weaving and textile art projects.
