Our Sheep Farmers
At the core of British Wool’s legacy are the dedicated and passionate sheep farmers who tend to their flocks across the picturesque landscapes of the United Kingdom. These unsung heroes play a pivotal role in ensuring the superior quality of the wool we offer to the world.
Why do sheep need shearing?
The Yorkshire Vet’s Peter Wright explains why shearing is an essential job for sheep farmers to look after their sheep.
Wool Intake at British Wool
The journey begins on the farms, where British wool is carefully sheared, collected, and brought to British Wool for grading and sorting ready for auctioning to the UK and international wool markets. We take pride in our close relationships with farmers and each sheet of wool that arrives at our facilities represents the hard work and dedication of British farmers.
Grading Wool and Selling at Auction
At British Wool, we meticulously grade every fleece by hand, our experienced graders assess each fleece on various criteria: including stable length, fineness, and colour. The graded wool is then made available to buyers at our regular auctions. These auctions provide a transparent and competitive platform for buyers, helping to secure the best value for our sheep farmers.
Packing Graded Wool
Once wool is graded, we take great care in preparing it for its next journey. Our team handles the packing process with precision and care, ensuring that the wool arrives at its destination in the best possible condition.
Testing Wool
Quality assurance is paramount at British Wool. We subject our wool to rigorous testing to guarantee that it meets the buyers’ needs and confidence in the wool they are purchasing at our auctions.
The wool is tested by the Wool Testing Authority, in Wales.
